Montreal, December 1st, 2014 - Under Honorary President Kunal Saha, Vice President, Product Supply and Distribution at Valero Energy, the 10th edition of the annual benefit tournament held at the Saint Raphaël Golf Club in Île-Bizard was a success. Thanks to the participation of 117 companies, 77 charitable organizations dedicated to children were able to receive support from the Valero Energy Foundation of Canada. Over the past 10 years, close to $4 million has been raised and distributed to charities in Quebec, Ontario and the Atlantic Provinces.
“Taking part in this event is a tangible gesture of support for children’s causes. I would like to thank, in particular, our business partners for their continued support in the past 10 years, along with the new partners who gave us their support this year and made this special edition a success,” said Ross R. Bayus, President of Canadian Operations, Valero Energy Inc.
The organizations receiving a donation improve the lives of children by providing them with numerous essential services such as health, school perseverance, fight against poverty and violence and good living habits programs. Various cheque presentations were made in our communities. The Valero Energy Foundation of Canada promotes the company’s involvement in the regions where it operates.
We also wish to take this opportunity to announce that, starting in 2015, the Valero Energy Foundation of Canada will focus its philanthropic mission more on school perseverance programs. However, it will remain faithful to its prime mission which is to lend support to charitable organizations that help children.
Mr. Bayus added that “according to analyses conducted by University of Montreal, though the number of dropouts has declined in Quebec over the last 10 years, close to 50% of boys from underprivileged areas drop out before they finish high school. In addition, depending on whether students attend a school in a more fortunate or somewhat underprivileged area, the graduation rate tumbles from 88 to 69%. I find this alarming, and as a result, we have decided to make perseverance a priority, because we must bear in mind that young people represent our future.”
